Scattered across the hotel grounds are hundreds of pomegranate trees, their twisted trunks and gnarled roots showcasing a thousand forms of rugged elegance. These venerable elders, many over a century old, include three particularly ancient specimens near the Eco Plaza and the entrance of the International Conference Center. Originally cultivated as cash crops in Shandong orchards, their fruits are no longer edible, but they have been reborn as ornamental plants. In early spring, tender green leaves emerge; in midsummer, fiery bell-shaped blossoms ignite the branches; autumn brings clusters of ruby-red fruits; and winter reveals their sculptural bare branches. Thus, they grace Tongli Lake with beauty throughout the seasons.
In Suzhou folklore, the fifth lunar month honors Zhong Kui as the Flower Deity of Pomegranates. When the vibrant red bell-shaped flowers bloom, they embody the ancient phrase "succumbing to the pomegranate skirt"—a metaphor for the irresistible allure of a stunning beauty. By September, the fruits develop abundant seeds, symbolizing "numerous offspring and prosperity", making them cherished symbols at weddings and childbirth celebrations.
