Tongli is a historic water town of Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Situated on the shores of Taihu Lake and east of the Ancient Canal. It is surrounded by water and embraced by eight lakes: Tongli, Jiuli, Chenghu, Muzhuang, Baiyan, Yeze, Nanxing, and Pangshanhu.
Tongli’s history dates back 6,000 years. Archaeological discoveries of the Songze Culture at Jiuli Lake reveal that even in ancient times, Tongli was surprisingly prosperous. During the pre-Qin period, it became a market town known as “Futu” (富土-Land of Abundance). In the early Tang Dynasty, its name was changed to “Tongli”(铜里-Copper County) to avoid connotations of extravagance. By the Song Dynasty, the original characters for“Futu”were cleverly rearranged by removing strokes to form “Tongli”(同里), a name that has been used to this day.
Strategically located at the intersection of Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, Tongli offers exceptional accessibility. One-hour drive east to Shanghai Hongqiao airport. Connected to major freeways: G50 (Shanghai-Chongqing), G42 (Shanghai-Nanjing), and Sujiahang freeway, making it ideal for both leisure and business travel.
